In a bid to foster and develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub, the hk prize promotes the research and development of local science talents. By promoting the excellence of scientific researchers, the prize aims to encourage and motivate science entrepreneurs to explore and persevere in their pursuit of innovation.
The prize focuses on five fields: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and FinTech. Each year, experts in these fields are invited to select outstanding scientific researchers/teams for their achievements and the potential of their research. In addition, the prize also aims to bolster Hong Kong’s strong capability in basic scientific research, further enhance the city’s scientific atmosphere, and strengthen its image as a leading science and technology power in the Mainland and the world.
This year’s winning finalists are fencer Vivian Kong, swimmer Edgar Cheung Ka-long and mathematician Siobhan Haughey, who clinched gold medals in their respective events. Each of them will receive a cheque for HK$6 million.
A total of nine US lawmakers from both parties nominated the pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong for a Nobel Peace Prize. They lauded the campaigners as global inspirations in the face of Beijing’s crackdown on free speech. The lawmakers said they expected more Hong Kong democracy advocates to be convicted for the sole reason of peacefully expressing their political views.
Prof. Cecilia Chu’s book, Building Colonial Hong Kong: Speculative Development and Segregation in the City, won 2024 IPHS Book Prize, a highly prestigious international award for major scholarly works on planning history. The prize was founded by Hong Kong media mogul and philanthropist Run Run Shaw, with the goal of boosting the development of science in the city. Since its launch in 2011, the hk prize has received a broad range of support from individuals and organizations in the city and abroad, and it is now one of the world’s premier science awards.
