Singapore Prize – Celebrating the Best Books on Singapore’s History

In Singapore, many prizes and awards are awarded to individuals, organizations and companies for their contribution to the community. This includes medals, cups, trophies and state decorations. These prizes are presented by various government ministries and agencies and are a great way to show appreciation for a job well done. Some of the most prestigious and well-known awards in Singapore include the Enterprise 50 Awards, the NORNS Awards, the National Youth Achievement Award and the Youth Champions.

The NUS Singapore History Prize is a literary award given to books on the history of Singapore. It was established in 2014 with the generous support of an anonymous donor and is administered by NUS. The prize is now doubled in value and a new category has been introduced — the Arts and Multimedia Category. The prize is alternated between the categories each year over a three-year cycle. A distinguished jury panel will judge the work of the winning entry. The inaugural prize winner was historian John N. Miksic for his book Singapore And The Silk Road Of The Sea, 1300-1800.

At the awards ceremony, he said that the finalists were a testament to the fact that “hope does exist”. He also praised the efforts of the winners in accelerating their solutions and bringing about tangible action.

He added that he was inspired by the work of the 15 finalists, which included an Indian maker of solar-powered dryers and soil carbon marketplace, and non-profits that restore Andean forests, help deter illegal fishing and bolster marine enforcement.

During the week-long event, members of the public will have the opportunity to meet and learn from the TEP finalists and hear their stories first-hand. This will allow them to understand and appreciate their important contributions, as well as to identify opportunities to collaborate with the finalists to accelerate their solutions.

In the evening, a star-studded awards gala will take place at Mediacorp’s Theatre. The show will highlight the inspiring achievements of the TEP finalists, and feature performances by global music superstars such as Bastille and OneRepublic, and actresses including Cate Blanchett, Lana Condor and Donnie Yen.

The final round of the competition was held on Monday, December 14, at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. This year’s final featured Dmytro Udovychenko, Anna Agafia Egholm and Angela Sin Ying Chan. The competition’s jury comprised Qian Zhou (Chair), Martin Beaver, Martin T:son Engstroem, Lee Kyung Sun and Mihaela Martin. The winners received cash prizes and concert engagements. The top prize of USD $110,000 was awarded to Dmytro, while the runner-up, Angela, won USD $25,000. The third place winner, Anna, won USD $15,000.
