If you aren’t afraid of heights, a trip to Hong Kong’s iconic rooftop pools will be the highlight of your vacation. You can swim laps and enjoy the views while sipping on a cocktail. Some are exclusive to guests, but others, such as the JW Marriott’s outdoor pool in Admiralty, are open to the public. The best part is that you can relax after your swim at the al fresco Fish Bar and Pool Lounge.
It takes a lot of creativity to design a large municipal swimming pool on a tight urban site that is surrounded by skyscrapers in a city known as the most vertical in the world. But the latest addition to Hong Kong’s public pools is a spaceship-shaped complex along Victoria Harbour designed by Terry Farrell and Partners. It took eight years to come to fruition but is a welcome addition to the city’s waterfront.
Swimming is a popular activity in Hong Kong, with the sport accounting for about 10,000 competitive swimmers among the 7.5 million people in the city. The Amateur Swimming Association of Hong Kong warned that the closure of some of the country’s 45 public swimming pools could have “catastrophic effects” on the training system that develops elite swimmers. The city’s coronavirus outbreak has led to the cancellation of some private pools and the suspension of swimming classes, but the union said that many public pools were still ready to reopen.
In a city that prides itself on reducing waste, the new Kennedy Town Swimming Pool is a sterling example of how to reuse materials. The refurbished complex uses recycled concrete and a translucent insulated tensile membrane, which reduces energy costs by keeping the water cool. It also allows for ample natural light, making the pool feel like a giant aquarium.
There’s a simple rule at the pool: Swim on the left side of the lane to avoid hitting swimmers in front of you, and let faster swimmers go ahead of you if they’re quicker than you are. The rule is clearly posted for everyone’s convenience, but it’s a rule that most people don’t seem to know or care about. And even the lifeguards don’t seem to enforce the rules with any seriousness.
